You Can Help a Child

Let none be like another

Yet each be like the highest

How can that be?

Let each be perfect in himself

Nutrition and Health Care

Nutrition

Around 1941, Mrs. Ellen Sharma noticed a hungry child unable to concentrate in his class. When she discovered that the boy's family was too poor to feed him, she began the first mid-day meal scheme in Tamil Nadu, India, by identifying underprivileged children and providing them with a free nutritious meal in school.

Today, more than 800 children in our city schools and at our schools in Karaipakkam and Sholinganallore benefit from our nutrition programs.

In addition to the government aided mid-day meal schemes, we provide free breakfast, health drinks (kanji, etc.), lunch, dinner, and healthy snacks to underprivileged children.

Full fledged kitchens have been built up over these 70 years and include steam cooking facilities, use of eco-friendly garden waste, and biogas (gobar gas). We reuse all waste from our agricultural and dairy farms to conserve energy and recycle waste.

Waste from our our kitchens is recycled through our Root Zone water purification project at Sholinganallur and reused in the fields.

Health Care

  • Our founders set up a small dental clinic to cater to the needs of our first students. This soon grew into a full fledged school clinic with resident nurses and visiting specialists.

  • We address all primary health needs, including regular checkups for dental care, ENT, skin problems, primary complex, and other health issues.

  • All children are vaccinated against polio and with triple antigen, etc. at our cost.

  • Detailed medical records are maintained for each child, and these are inspected by our visiting doctors.

  • Physiotherapy for polio afflicted children and for those who require special care is also provided with the help of special equipment.

  • The clinics also provide dietary and vitamin supplements for children who need them.

  • The Little Doctor Program initiated at the Ellen Sharma Kindergarten and Primary School, Mylapore, inculcates an awareness of health issues amongst children and parents.
