Nutrition and Health Care
Around 1941, Mrs. Ellen Sharma noticed a hungry child unable to concentrate in his class. When she discovered that the boy's family was too poor to feed him, she began the first mid-day meal scheme in Tamil Nadu, India, by identifying underprivileged children and providing them with a free nutritious meal in school. Today, more than 800 children in our city schools and at our schools in Karaipakkam and Sholinganallore benefit from our nutrition programs. In addition to the government aided mid-day meal schemes, we provide free breakfast, health drinks (kanji, etc.), lunch, dinner, and healthy snacks to underprivileged children. Full fledged kitchens have been built up over these 70 years and include steam cooking facilities, use of eco-friendly garden waste, and biogas (gobar gas). We reuse all waste from our agricultural and dairy farms to conserve energy and recycle waste. Waste from our our kitchens is recycled through our Root Zone water purification project at Sholinganallur and reused in the fields.
